Holidays in Tirolo

Tirolo

Tirolo (Dorf Tirol) is the oldest village of Merano and its surroundings and lies at 596 metres above sea level. The whole country and the main castle were named after it. The famous vacation village with its parish church and castles lies on the sunny hill Monte Benedetto, above Merano.

The Tyrol Castle is especially worth seeing, it is enthroned on a hillside and houses the South Tyrolean State Museum for cultural and state history, it can be reached on foot on a nice path. You can watch a bird of prey show there too. The castle  Fontana lies to the west in San Pietro and is an agriculture museum. San Pietro is the oldest parish of South Tyrol and has a beautiful little church, its foundation walls date back to pre-Roman times around the 5th century and it is one of the oldest sacral buildings in the country.

To the north of the village a cable car takes hikers up to the nature park Gruppo del Tessa and to the Via Alta high panoramic path.
On foot you can easily reach the Tappeiner Promenade and the so called "Waalweg" of Lagundo that follows the irrigation canal. Tirolo has an open air swimming pool with a panoramic view over Merano and its surroundings.
